Thanks for joining me! Here is my story about how I found out I was pregnant.
July 22, 2018 I had just returned from a week-long trip from the shore with my best friend, Ashley. This week long shore trip was a late birthday celebration for me. I didn’t have to worry about work since school was out for the summer, and I didn’t have to worry about setting up my classroom for a few more weeks. Being able to go to the shore, visit the beautiful sandy beaches and walk the piers of different shores was so relaxing and good for our mindset.
When I returned home from the shore, I knew my monthly cycle was coming. I was honestly just glad I didn’t have it for my birthday. Days had gone by and still, nothing. On July 27, 2018 I decided I would take a test. At that point, it was the day my cycle was due to arrive and there were no signs of anything appearing. It was Friday night around 5:00pm when I finally took the test. I figured it would be negative because… “how could I be pregnant”? I was a bit nervous taking it, but was positive that a second line would not show.
Wrong was I. In my bathroom I picked up the test strip, glanced down and saw a faint second line. My heart dropped and I looked in the mirror in front of me with fear. So many thoughts raced in my head:
What will people think?
I have to tell my boss?
I just got married 7 months ago, how can this be happening?
Negative thoughts raced in my head. I’ve always desired to be a mom, but so soon? I rushed out of the bathroom and immediately woke my sleeping husband (who happened to be working over night that night). I started screaming as my voice trembled, “babe wake up it’s an emergency! I’m pregnant”. The look on his face was one I wish I could have recorded. Waking him up while he was dead asleep was not the best idea. He was not comforting, he was not understanding, in fact, he dismissed the thought and went back to sleep.
I took a second strip and tested again, thinking that test #1 could have been faulty. When I checked test #2, sure enough it was positive, again. I never felt so alone in that moment.
I picked up my phone and debated who to tell. Do I call my sister? My mom? My best friend? I simply was not ready for the first two options, so I picked up the phone and called Ashley, my best friend of 12 years.
I felt like the phone rang for 3 hours, and still no answer. I quickly sent three texts to her. Why isn’t she answering? She usually always has her phone on her!
I had to take matters into my own hands. I grabbed the two test strips, hopped in my new SUV, and hit the road to Ashley’s house. I felt like a speed racer traveling 100 mph trying to get to Ashley’s house to figure out what was going on. As I approached her house she ran out to my car, the car was still in drive mode, and she immediately asked, “who died Em?” thinking that something had to have been wrong. It certainly was not the way I had intended to tell my best friend either, but I had to talk to someone about it. At Ashley’s house we shared a moment together of us just talking and conversing about me having a baby. By the end of the night I calmed down, and knew I needed to have a big conversation with my husband since he was not in the right mindset for a big conversation that night.
The following day I had helped my best friend Paula move into her new house. I was nervous to carry heavy boxes up stairs knowing that I could be pregnant. I already felt myself trying to protect this little precious life inside me, and I didn’t even know if it was real or not. That night, my husband Bill and I took 2 “more official” pregnancy tests alongside the eager Ashley and Paula to determine if I was actually pregnant or not. Within seconds, the digital test read “Pregnant” and the blue dye test displayed a cross showing that I was in fact, pregnant as ever.
We all celebrated, laughed, and I had a good cry with my husband. We knew in our hearts that God had a greater plan for us, and we knew it was a blessing from above. Little did we know one blessing would turn into two when we found out we were having twins on August 30, 2018.
